Bastard Angel No. 1 (Spring 1972)
San Francisco, CA: Harold Norse, 1972. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. "After that we were on the run never staying more than one night in the same hotel. The Dib was coughing and sweating at night and he had nightmares and when he woke up he would sob into the pillow "Johnny we gotta get out of here. Don't let me die here." One night we checked into a hotel late I didn't like the look of the clerk a fatish man with cold eyes." (from "Do Not Disturb the Mongrels" by William S. Burroughs, pg. 2) This vintage inaugural issue of the now-classic literary journal edited, published & with contributions by Harold Norse (1916-2009, among our favorite Beat-&-Beyonders) features the above-quoted piece by William S. Burroughs (1914-1997), Founding Father of the Beat Generation-&-Beyond, among the foremost literary & cultural figures of all time, & the Patron-Icon of our very enterprise. WSB's contribution here is a delightfully sinister, paranoid post-cut-up noirish scenario. Maynard & Miles, C329, pg. 171; Shoaf, Section III, No. 188, pg. 143; Schottlaender (just-published 5.0 edition!), C331, pg. 67. Also in this counter-culture cornucopia of an issue are contributions by avant-garde Living Theatre founders Julian Beck & his wife Judith Malina; Paul Bowles (a translation into English of a story by his Moroccan friend Mohammed Mrabet); Andrei Codrescu; Diane di Prima, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Kaufman, Jack Kerouac, Lawrence Lipton, Michael McClure, Norse himself, Charles Plymell (our good friend & Legendary Literary Outlaw); & more. With mind-blowing, provocative collages & illustrations at covers & throughout. Large-format journal in stapled wrappers, first-&-only printing. A truly essential collectible with many of the most significant Beat-&-Co. writers between its hallowed covers (especially WSB & Norse in our enlightened estimation). This copy is in exceptionally very fine condition with only a touch of rubbing & occasional light spotting to front, back covers & stapled spine; a touch of wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; light browning to edges of text block; staples beginning to rust with no discernable interior or exterior bleeding. Interior very fine with only mild browning mostly at thin blank edges of page leaves; tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of some of same. Very Fine. [Item #5869]
