ISBN: 9780553110746
New York, NY: Bantam Books, 1999. First Edition. Signed by John Glenn. John Herschel Glenn Jr. ( 1921–2016) was an American Marine Corps aviator, engineer, astronaut, businessman, and politician. He was the third American in space, and the first American to orbit the Earth, circling it three times in 1962. Following his retirement from NASA, he served from 1974 to 1999 as a U.S. Senator from Ohio; in 1998, he flew into space again at the age of 77. “John Glenn: A Memoir”, is an in depth look into this extraordinary life of an American icon that, as the inside flap of the dust-jacket says, “Spans the seminal events of the twentieth century. It is a story that begins with his childhood in Ohio where he learned the importance of family, community, and patriotism. He took these values with him as a marine fighter pilot during World War II and into the skies over Korea, for which he would be decorated. Always a gifted flier, it was during the war that he contemplated the unlimited possibilities of aviation and its frontiers.” This memoir is as insightful as it is easy to digest and enjoyable to read. The prose is minimalist, while still being able to vividly capture memories and scenery; the structure is as straightforward as the form would imply; and ultimately, the memoir gives us an intimate look into the backdrop that informed the life of one of the most impressive figures of the 20th century. The author has signed his name in thick blue ink at the half-title page. Hardcover in unclipped dust-jacket. First edition, First Printing, as indicated by number sequence on copyright page.
