The Letters of Samuel Beckett 1929-1989 (Four Volumes in Slipcase)

The Letters of Samuel Beckett 1929-1989 (Four Volumes in Slipcase)

Cambridge, England: Cambridge University Press, 2009-2016. First Edition. Hardcovers in Slipcase. "The Cambridge University Press edition of The Letters of Samuel Beckett offers for the first time a comprehensive range of letters of one of the greatest literary figures of the twentieth century. Selected for their bearing on his work from over 15,000 extant letters, the letters published in this four-volume edition encompass sixty years of Beckett's writing life (1929-1989), and include letters to friends, painters and musicians, as well as students, publishers, translators, and colleagues in the world of literature and theatre. For anyone interested in twentieth-century literature and theatre this edition is essential reading, offering not only a record of Beckett's achievements but a powerful literary experience in itself." (from front flap of Vol. 1) The definitive, monumental compilation of letters by Samuel Beckett (1906-1989), the canonical Irish-born author, poet & playwright. Four hardcovers in dust jackets, housed in a handsome slipcase with stark, black-&-white photographic images of a stern, craggy-faced Beckett in his later years on side & rear panels. A production of the venerable Cambridge University Press, edited by a variety of foremost Beckett academicians & illustrated with facsimile manuscript pages, etc. throughout each volume. Vol. 1 (1929-1940) was first published in 2009; Vol. 2 (1941-1956) in 2011; Vol. 3 (1957-1965) in 2014 & Vol. 4 (1966-1989) in 2016. The first printings as issued state "First published (year)" as customary in staid UK/ University Press publications (this writer purchased each volume as it was released). This set is still sealed, & therefore we cannot confirm which or if each volume is a first printing, the seven-year period in which they were published indicates the possibility that by the time this full set arrived, the first several volumes may be later printings. In any case, we are quite certain that this is an original full set, likely produced during the year of the final volume (2016). From the collection of the late, great George Bornstein (1941-2021), scholar, author & academician here at the University of Michigan- a true Man of Letters who was a dearly missed friend & mentor to myself. A magisterial, highly acclaimed & most richly rewarding collection; an absolutely essential Beckett collectible in its rarest original full form & with distinguished provenance. As noted above, this set is sealed & we cannot closely inspect the volumes as we normally would, but judging from their jacket-spines they appear to be mint/as new. The slipcase does appear to have some slight damage as seen through the seal: Left side lower panel & left side bottom panel edges appear to be in process of separation with attendant creasing/loss of surface paper; there is a short, closed tear at lower front right panel; & lower edge between rear & lower panel also appears to be in process of separation with attendant creasing/loss of surface paper. We must presume that these slipcase points occurred during shipping &/or handling, are possibly flaws as issued, & cannot be the result of use or wear as the set is entirely sealed (except at lower front & rear edges where there are areas of neat splitting). An extra handling fee will be added for shipping due to the size and weight of this item. As New (Sealed) / As New; Slipcase slightly damaged. [Item #5898]
