Best Minds: How Allen Ginsberg Made Revolutionary Poetry from Madness

ISBN: 9781531502669
New York, NY: Fordham University Press, 2023. First Edition. Hardcover. “In Stevan Weine’s illuminating study, madness is no mere metaphor. Using Allen Ginsberg’s medical records and those of his mother, Naomi Ginsberg, Best Minds explores the secrets of Ginsberg’s experiences with madness, providing a refreshing new look at his most famous poem, ‘Howl’ and expanding what we know of the poet’s life. Ginsberg, who consented for Naomi’s lobotomy, would speak of the lack of tenderness in the mindset of midcentury America and then write about new hopes and liberations. Best Minds offers an in-depth look at a bygone era of radical medical solutions to human problems and one gifted individual’s suffering, guilt, survival, poetry, and optimism” (Regina Weinreich). The above-quoted blurb-endorsement from the early, perceptive, and pioneering Regina Weinrich — among the most perceptive commentators on Jack Kerouac in the history of Beat scholarship, and commendably among/ within its ‘inaugural graduating class'—is both summative and well-earned in this author’s view. Friend of Third Mind Books, Illinois University psychology professor, Dr. Stevan Weine’s Best Minds: How Allen Ginsberg Made Revolutionary Poetry from Madness is perfectly cooked and nothing short of masterful. Perhaps that’s the wrong joke to issue when considering a topic as serious as Naomi’s Ginsberg’s abusive, torrential and progressively worsening mental breaks, — which were the primary destabilizing force in the Ginsberg household from Allen’s early childhood, on. One is only compelled to ruminate in the direction of sensitivities because “Best Minds” paints so poignant and unflinching a portrait; contrasts so sharply what might be called the ascensive portion of Naomi’s life—that half-season of relative marital harmony and dexterous physical fortitude enjoyed by young parents before the twilight of their youth disappears like a weekend gone too fast. As the book depicts, the implosive leveling of Naomi’s mind began shortly after Allen was born. Naomi and Allen’s father, Louis had made an un-cancellable mistake oddly common at that time. In efforts fashioned towards a rekindling of their marriage, Louis and Naomi attempted to roll the shared, reformational joys native to the ‘marriage-and-kids’ experience into saving or aiding their marriage — and most potent among them was & is the procreative magic of birth. So on April 3, 1926 a baby was delivered in Newark, New Jersey that the world would one day come to know as the 20th Century’s answer to Whitman. In the meantime however, Ginsberg’s childhood, pre-teen, teenage and immediate years of young adulthood are all bullet-holed with traumas native to, relating to, or directly resultant from his mother. Using his medically licensed psychiatric training, Weine possesses the construction of mind required to pull off an errand of such interdisciplinary breadth and expressive magnitude. As Ginsberg enthusiasts and torchbearers ourselves, We at TMB can only hope that it is read even more widely in futures near and far; accessioned by academies in decades to come. We hosted Dr. Weine at our store on April 1st, 2023 for a book launch and signing for Best Minds. Dr. Weine also attended the European Beat Studies Network conference in September of this year where our research on William S. Burroughs' cut-up method was presented.
