Love Is No Stone on the Moon

Berkeley, CA: ARIF Press, 1971. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. "LOVE/ not only ate/ the white wheelbarrow/ but put its foot/ in the oven and/ I am writing this/ as its red wheel/ turns + turns/ through Nowhere" (Part I, first pg.) A chapbook with the title poem(?) by Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021), poet-publisher-visionary at the helm of City Lights Books from its inception in 1953 until his passing in 2021 at over a century old (quite a record for such a primary Beat-&-Beyond figure). Described as an "automatic poem" created in June 1971 per copyright-title page, here we have Ferlinghetti at his inspired Dada-Surreal non sequitur height. One of 1000 copies published on September 1, 1971 per Morgan, A30, pgs. 63-64. A strange production in which, to quote Morgan, the "Entire publication except for page 2 and back cover (is) in facsimile holograph. Pages 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 are inverted pages from other sources overprinted in facsimile holograph." (pg. 64) A unique & delightful collectible in the vast Ferlinghetti oeuvre. In relatively quite fine condition with mild rubbing, browning & occasional spotting to pale-blue front, back covers & stapled spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; mild rubbing, browning to edges of text block esp. lower edge of same. Interior very fine with only light browning to blank inner covers & page leaves, the latter mostly at blank margins/edges; tiny bumps at corners of some leaves. Fine. [Item #5938]
