Alice in Wonderland Panorama with Movable Pictures

London, England, UK: Raphael Tuck & Sons, 1910. First Edition. Folded Panorama. An antique, artistic representation of the classic Lewis Carroll story, this panorama shows several key scenes of the original with beautiful watercolor imagery by the illustrator A(da) L(eonora) Bowley (1866-1943), who with her sister Sophia May Bowley (1864-1960) worked as designers for Raphael Tuck for most of their careers. Long before the 1951 Walt Disney animated film based on Carroll’s story, this abridged version is solely based on the 1865 novel and so includes several less familiar aspects of the story. The characters beloved through every adaptation are of course present: the White Rabbit, the Mad-Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, and the Queen of Hearts, for example. Measuring 48” long unfolded and classified as a “paper toy” rather than a book, this was part of the 30-volume series of “Father Tuck’s Panorama with Moveable Pictures” published in the early 20th century; other featured stories include, for example, depictions of the Royal family, the Royal Air Force, the English Channel, trains, cars, the circus, the zoo, as well as classic fairy tales like Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Robin Hood. Being 114 years old, this rarely-intact item has lived a very full life with an unknown amount of young readers not known for their delicacy, and yet it has survived. An incredible addition to any aficionado of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Four-Panel Panorama Board Book: First Edition. Meant to feature an attached-envelope flap to house the loose pieces when not in use, which is absent here, but all 15 pieces are accounted for. Boards are in relatively good-to-near-fine condition with significant bumping to edges and corners; significant rubbing, scratching to the exterior boards though images are clear and vibrant; tape from a previous restoration is found along the folded edges holding the boards together rather loosely; a stray piece of tape is adhered to the verso of board two which is the second half of the truncated story text; piece #10 has a piece of tape repairing the rabbit’s ears; the slots that hold several pieces have closed tears to the edges (#2, #7, #9, #12, #14, #15). Good-Near Fine. [Item #5997]
