New York, NY: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1980. First Edition. Hardcover. "Art Deco was a major decorative style of the 1920s- the perfect expression of the extravagance of Paris during that decade. Renowned for its opulence and exclusiveness, Art Deco embraced every area of the decorative arts, including furniture, jewelry, painting and graphics, bookbinding, glass, and ceramics, and was the last coherent decorative style to emerge from Europe during this (twentieth) century. The 1925 Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, from which the style took its name, united the work of the finest French artists in a dazzling display of luxury. Its creators were primarily painters and sculptors who employed highly skilled craftsmen to execute their designs in rare and exotic materials such as figured woods, precious stones and metals, glass, and ivory, favoring strong and vibrant colors." (from front flap) A sweeping survey of the fabulous Art Deco style as created by its greatest French exponents, from its inception in the 1920s through the early 1930s- the height of French Art Deco expression in many medias. Author Victor Arwas (1937-2010), a British-based art dealer, collector & scholar, was a famously "Larger-than-life personality" (from March 16, 2010 obituary in the Guardian, UK) who produced this homage to his favorite style with expertise & passion. Arwas provides an Introduction, notes & writings throughout, & selected the exemplary, outstanding artworks that are lavishly reproduced in color & black-&-white. A superbly beautiful, coffee-table door-stopper production, hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition, first printing (though neither explicated as such per custom of this venerable publisher).
