Poems in English

London, England, UK: John Calder, 1961. First UK Trade Edition. Hardcover. "Samuel Beckett was born in Dublin in 1906, but has lived in Paris since before (World War II). Although his reputation today is based principally on his post-war novels and plays, he wrote two pre-war novels, a number of short stories and much poetry. The present volume consists of those poems written in the English language which the author is willing to have preserved. It also contains a few poems written in French, translated by Beckett himself, together with the original texts. The publishers hope that one day a bi-lingual edition of the complete French poems will be authorized. Beckett is now universally recognized as one of the finest prose-stylists of the twentieth century, and the true literary successor to James Joyce. This volume shows that he is also a major poet." (from front flap) A slim-but-profound collection of poems by Samuel Beckett (1906-1989), the canonical Irish-born author, poet & playwright. Offered here is the first trade edition of this work published in the UK during 1961, hardcover in unclipped dust jacket. This is indeed the very first edition altogether of this classic & influential collection, preceding the first American edition (published by Barney Rosset's Grove Press) by two years. "First Edition" as stated on copyright page, presumed first printing though not explicated as such thereon. As noted, "A limited edition of one hundred copies on hand-/ made paper and signed by the author has been printed/ (hors commerce) in advance of the first edition." From the collection of Robin Eichele (b. 1941), a noted American Mimeograph Revolutionary Poet who co-founded, with John Sinclair, the Detroit Artists' Workshop & is our nearby good friend. Eichele has hand-written his non-cursive ownership name in black ink at upper right margin of blank front endpaper. An essential Beckett collectible in its rarest contemporary trade form, with distinguished provenance. Book in relatively quite fine condition with minor rubbing, fading to lighter blue-colored cloth front, back covers & spine (gilt letters at spine appear very bright & intact); light wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at (esp. upper) edges & corners of same; moderate rubbing, browning & spotting to upper edge of text block; much less to side & lower edges of same. Interior very fine with mostly mild browning to blank (except for owner's name noted above) paste-downs, endpapers & page leaves (the latter mostly at blank margins/edges); tiny bumps, faint creases at upper corners of a few leaves. Dust jacket near-fine with mild-to-moderate rubbing, browning, fading & faint scratching to front, back covers, esp. spine & flaps; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same esp. spine-edges, corners; some loss of letters on spine (esp.
