Vintage 1923 Boy Scouts of America Ephemera Collection

New York, NY: Boy Scouts of America, 1923. First Editions Thus. Cards; Envelope. Three fascinating pieces of Boy Scouts of America ephemera, vintage 1923: (1) Three-panel certification card printed on both sides, certifying that one Carl Oldenburg "is registered for the year ending/ November 1923" as a member of a "chartered troop" which was not filled in at verso, but signed by a Scoutmaster & Scout Commissioner. Recto central & right panels are beautifully illustrated & with stirring, exemplary Boy Scout sayings: "LOYALTY/PATRIOTISM/CHIVALRY," "BE PREPARED" & "DO A GOOD TURN DAILY." Verso left & central panels packed with information regarding "The Scout Oath," "The Scout Law" & illustrated guides to Morse, Semaphore codes. (2) Envelope regarding "BOYS' LIFE/ The Boy Scouts' Magazine," brown paper printed & illustrated at recto. (3) Paper subscription slip with "$2.00 per Year...INTRODUCTORY OFFER..." to Boys' Life magazine at recto; inspiring message entitled "GREETINGS, SCOUT!" from the national Chief Scout Executive James E. West with his facsimile signature at verso. The envelope (2) described above was, we believe, made to house & present this last item. These rarities form a century-old time capsule-window into a classic, still-flourishing American institution that was first chartered, as noted on (1), only seven years earlier. These relics are in exceptionally very fine, almost as-new condition for a tragic reason according to our source: The youthful Mr. Oldenburg died suddenly right after receiving them. With only very slight rubbing, browning to surfaces; touches of edge & corner wear incl. a few tiny bumps, creases. Very Fine. [Item #6040]
