New York, NY: Random House, 2021. First Edition. Hardcover. “In the spring of 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson had a decision to make. Just months after moving into the White House under the worst of circumstances–following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy–he had to decide whether to run to win the presidency in his own right. He turned to his most reliable, trusted political strategist: his wife, Lady Bird Johnson. The strategy memo she produced urging him to run was emblematic of her own power and political acumen and until now has been largely overlooked by biographers. In Lady Bird Johnson: Hiding in Plain Sight, Julia Sweig reveals how indispensable the First Lady was in what Lady Bird called “our” presidency.” (from front flap). Though Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908-1973) is a highly respected former president, the wizard behind the curtain during his years in the White House was his wife. Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson (1912-2007) was well-educated and savvy both politically and economically, and she made ground-breaking decisions in policy and campaigning during the tumultuous decade that was the 1960s. Even before they were thinking about the presidency, Lady Bird became a millionaire in her own right after a successful investment in television with her own inheritance. Her southern upbringing gave her the tools she needed to persuade and charm anyone, smoothing over situations created by Lyndon’s harsh personality and connecting to southern voters during the Kennedy-Johnson campaign in 1960. As one of if not the most highly regarded First Ladies, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1984, the highest honors afforded to a civilian. With such a rich and interesting topic, Sweig turned her biographical research into an 8-episode podcast/audio-documentary “In Plain Sight: The Lady Bird Johnson Podcast,” co-produced by ABC, and a documentary film, “The Lady Bird Diaries,” directed by Dawn Porter.
