London, England, UK: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1993. First Edition. Hardcover. "When my father died at eighty-four...he and I had been together for just over fifty years. In the immediate aftermath of his sudden death, I knew two things: How much I would always miss the sheer joy of his company, and how much I wanted to write about him, if only to explain to myself and my children the life and career of the last great Boulevardier of his or any other time. We now live in a director's and a writer's theatre; Robert's was always an actor's theatre, and usually his own. He starred in fifty plays and nearly a hundred movies, wrote much of his own dialogue and many of his own parts...The author and star of Edward, My Son was also the first Oscar Wilde on stage and screen. He was Louis XI, and George III and George IV and Arnold Holt and Andrew Undershaft and W.S. Gilbert and Alexander Dumas and Charles James Fox, and the missionary brother of Katharine Hepburn in The African Queen...On stage he occupied Shaftesbury Avenue and the Savoy theatre as his own theatrical empire...and (was) perhaps the last gentleman actor. But apart from all of that, who was he and what did he make of a remarkable life?" (Sheridan Morley, excerpted from front flap) A biography of Robert Morley (b. Robert Adolph Wilton Morley, 1908-1992), the beloved, much-honored & quintessentially British actor of stage & screen. Author Sheridan Morley (1941-2007) was an acclaimed & prolific biographer, critic & broadcaster- & Robert Morley's eldest son. With three sections of captioned historic photographs. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition published exclusively (we believe) in the UK, presumed first printing "First published in Great Britain in 1993..." as stated on copyright page. We found & have retained, between pages 24-25 & 136-137 respectively, bookmarks from the fabled Borders Book Shop (Birmingham, Michigan branch) & the venerable Hatchards bookstore in London (from which this copy was undoubtedly purchased), both in very fine condition. From the collection of Barbara (1935-2023) & Irving (1933-2018) Nusbaum- world travelers, connoisseurs, eminent collectors of art & books, and the dearly beloved parents of this grieving writer. I fondly remember seeing Robert Morley perform on stage at the Savoy Theatre in London with them during a family trip a half-century ago as of the year of this writing. An intimate & insightful biography of one of the wittiest, most delightful & unforgettable actors of the twentieth century who lives on in his prolific film portrayals, in its rarest contemporary form & with distinguished provenance. Book in very fine condition with only several tiny spots near lower right edge of burgundy-colored front cover; a hint of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; very slight bending of spine toward front. Interior very fine with only one small crease where formerly folded at lower corner of one page leaf (pgs. 19-20); otherwise substantially mint. Dust jacket very fine with only light rubbing, faint scratching to front, back covers & spine; some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same & flaps. Very Fine / Very Fine. [Item #6071]
