Riprap

Kyoto, Japan: Origin Press, 1960. Second Edition. Sewn Wrappers. Inscribed, dated & signed by Gary Snyder. "Down valley a smoke haze/ Three days heat, after five days rain/ Pitch glows on the fir-cones/ Across rocks and meadows/ Swarms of new flies.// I cannot remember things I once read/ A few friends, but they are in cities./ Drinking cold snow-water from a tin cup/ Looking down for miles/ Through high still air." ("Mid-August at Sourdough Mountain Lookout," unpaginated) The second-ever published collection by Gary Snyder (b. 1930), the Canonical Beat Generation, San Francisco Renaissance & environmentalist American poet who is still with us & active as of this writing at the age of 93, & whose works have been enshrined in the venerable Library of America series. This is the "second edition" of the classic Riprap poems as noted on copyright page, published by Cid Corman's legendary Origin imprint, produced in Japan & distributed in the USA by the iconic City Lights Books as noted thereon. Chapbook with brown-patterned paper covers sewn with purple thread between mostly exposed spine, & with author/ title sheet affixed to front cover. With all points in McNeil, A1(b), pg. 3, which refers to this as the "First edition, second printing" & notes that this edition consisted of 1000 copies. On the front endpaper/ title page, at blank upper margin above & just touching his printed name, Snyder has beautifully hand-written, dated & signed in bold black ink: "For Henry 10.XI.92(10 November 1992)/ (signed) Gary Snyder." An exemplary, delicate Japanese-crafted production; the first-&-foremost Snyder collectible in its penultimately rarest form, greatly enriched by the poet's stately inscription, date & signature. See also our item No. 5088.
