ISBN: 0688045286
New York, NY: William Morrow and Company, 1985. First Edition. Hardcover. “Katharine Hepburn is one of the greatest most enduring stars of this century. Now, for the first time, her story is told in full. From her unconventional childhood to her current role as grande dame of American actresses, the many faces of this truly remarkable woman are revealed.” (from front flap) What can be said about Katharine Hepburn (1907-2003) that hasn’t already been said? Hollywood’s iconic leading lady skyrocketed to success after debuting on Broadway in 1928, the same year she graduated from Bryn Mawr University. Hepburn wanted to challenge herself and threw herself enthusiastically into any role she played, leaving audiences and producers awestruck. Her film debut came in 1932 with her role in A Bill of Divorcement, co-starring John Barrymore. Two of her most successful roles, Morning Glory & Little Women, were both released in 1933, cementing her in the public eye as the newest starlet to shine on the silver screen. For Morning Glory she won her first Academy Award for Best Actress. The American Film Institute named her “the greatest American screen legend” among females in 1999, and Hepburn continued to act into her 80s until her ill-health prevented her from working. As she navigated the industry through the decades, critics tried to tear her down, rumors and speculation about her personal life ran rampant, and she is widely believed to have been not as heterosexual as most wanted to believe. After a single marriage and divorce, she intentionally remained unmarried (though she had relationships) and had no children. This fascinating woman so publicly on display remained a mystery for many, and in A Remarkable Woman, Anne Edwards (b. 1927) weaves together the experiences that created one of the most important women in history and an icon of the twentieth century.
