Miserable Miracle

San Francisco, CA: City Lights Books, 1963. First Edition Thus. Softcover. "This is a limited edition of Miserable Miracle by the great French poet & painter, Henri Michaux. Very beautifully translated by Louise Varese, this book records in words and drawings the poet's profound experience with mescaline, the hallucinogen which Michaux has described as a drug that "de-mystifies," unmasking the mind and its secrets and the secrets of consciousness itself." (back cover) The classic chronicle in words & pictures by Henri Michaux (1899-1984), the great Belgian-born French Surreal- Sui Generis poet, author & artist. As Aldous Huxley did in the near-contemporaneous The Doors of Perception (see our item No. 5654), Michaux described in prose (& here also in drawings) his experiences with mescalin(e) a decade before it became popular during the countercultural explosion of the 1960s, which both writers surely influenced. Originally published in French in 1956, here we have the first English translation by Louise Varese (1890-1989), the acclaimed American author, editor & translator who was the wife of the iconic French avant-garde musical composer Edgard Varese. Large-format softcover in sewn binding, from limited first edition thus of 300 copies published in 1963 by the fabled City Lights imprint, with all points in Cook (No. 44, pg. 47) incl. reference to limited edition quoted above (without number of copies which is per Cook), $1.95 price stated at back cover, etc. With two sections of four reproduced drawings each, executed by Michaux under the influence. A must-have for the Beat-&-Beyond Third Mind collector in its very rarest English-language form.
