APO-33 Bulletin: A Metabolic Regulator

San Francisco, CA: Beach Books Texts & Documents, 1966. First Edition. Staplebound. “A Report on the Synthesis of the Apomorphine Formula,” this is the second edition (first edition thus) of this very rare item by William S. Burroughs (1914–1997), preceded only by the elusive and nearly impossible to obtain first edition by Ed Sanders’ Fuck You Press, which was rejected by Burroughs and of which only a couple of copies are known to exist. A photo-offset of an original Burroughs scrapbook-manuscript with columned cut-up text and images, 3000 copies were printed of the second and third editions during c. 1966, 1967 (reprint of second edition) and 1968 respectively, according to publisher’s estimate. Maynard & Miles, A12(b,c), pgs. 57-58; Shoaf, Section I, No.s 12, 12(a), pg. 32; Schottlaender, A13(B), pg. 8. The copy offered here appears to have all points in the bibliographers’ collective descriptions of the first printing of the second (first practically available, as above) edition, with one interesting exception: in Maynard & Miles, it is noted following descriptions of the three printings that “Price was $1.25.” We have seen copies from all three printings over the years and the price printed has, without fail, is always $1.50, as here. Thus we are led to believe that the $1.25 price reference may be a (very rare, probably only ever) mistake in the foundational Maynard & Miles bibliography–please forgive us this jousting pedantry against your otherwise spotless scholarship, Miles. The other bibliographies do not mention any price. A production of Beach Books Texts & Documents, the imprint of Mary Beach and Claude Pelieu, mother and stepfather of Pamela Beach Plymell, and in-laws of Literary-Outlaw-Legend Charles PLymell. All four of these well-known writers, artists, and publishers were close friends and associates of William S. Burroughs. Distributed by Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s City Lights publishers, as noted on front endpaper. A most desirable and important collectible by the Founder’s Founder of the Beat Generation, among the most prophetic and influential literary-cultural figures of all time. Large-Format Pamphlet in stapled wrappers: First Edition Thus. In very fine condition with only slight smudging, browning to front and back covers, and light wear to fine edges. Very Fine.
