The Estate

New York, NY: Farrar , Straus and Giroux, 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. "This is a sequel to and the conclusion of the long novel that Isaac Bashevis Singer began with The Manor. It continues the portrayal of a period the author describes as "the epoch between the Polish insurrection of 1863 and the end of the nineteenth century...The Jews now began to play an important role in Polish industry, commerce, the arts and sciences. All the spiritual and intellectual ideas that triumphed in the modern era had their roots in the world of that time....The human condition, in a particular time and place- man's estate- is the theme of this major novel. As one character says, 'It's not child's play to be born, to marry, to bring forth generations, to grow old, to die.'" (from front & rear flaps) An acclaimed novel by Isaac Bashevis Singer (1903-1991), the great & prolific award-winning Jewish-American writer whose works are now enshrined in the canon of the Library of America. As noted above, The Estate is a sequel to/ conclusion of the saga of the Jewish-Polish Kaminer-Jacoby family begun with his novel The Manor (1967). As with all of Singer's writings, it is based on his European Jewish Diaspora heritage which was ruptured & all-but-destroyed by the Holocaust; & was originally written in the Yiddish language. Singer translated many of his works into English himself, in this case his nephew Joseph Singer & Co. were the translators, as he mentions in his Author's Note. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket (undoubtedly first-issue with $6.95 price printed at front flap), first edition, "First printing, 1969" as stated on copyright page. From the collection of Barbara (1935-2023) & Irving (1933-2018) Nusbaum, world travellers, connoisseurs, eminent collectors of art & books- the dearly beloved parents of this grieving writer. On the otherwise blank light-brown front endpaper, Barbara Nusbaum has hand-written a "Nusbaums" ownership reference in her beautiful cursive calligraphy with characteristic flourish, in bold black ink. A classic Singer collectible in its rarest contemporary form, with distinguished provenance. Book in relatively very fine condition with only very slight rubbing, faint scratching to black-colored cloth front, back covers & spine (gilt & red letters, graphics at spine & front cover quite bright & intact); a touch of wear, fading at edges & corners of same; light browning, rubbing & occasional spotting, faint scratching to side & lower edges of text block; minor fading, faint scratching to red-dyed upper edge of same.
