New York, NY: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1983. First Edition. “The way of the world is to bloom and to flower and die but in the affairs of men there is no waning and the noon of his expression signals the onset of night. His spirit is exhausted at the peak of its achievement. His meridian is at once his darkening and the evening of his day.”--Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian, Or the Evening Redness in the West. The second work in the great later trilogy of novels by William S. Burroughs, a founding father of the Beat Generation; a literary-cultural figure of gigantic influence & inspiration. Preceded by Cities of the Red Night (1981) & followed by The Western Lands (1987), The Place of Dead Roads (1983) chronicles the story of a gay gunfighter in the American West, beginning with the gunfighter's death in 1899, incorporates contrasting themes and plays with non-linear time/time travel, and makes use of Burroughs’ oceanic knowledge of firearms. Non-linear in construction, it makes use of vivid imagery and repetition but does not employ the famous “cut-up” method of literary collage used in his earlier novels. A phantasmagoria that is one part Western, one part sci-fi, and one part bizzaro-fucked-up-nightmare (a staple of a WSB novel), The Place of Dead Roads is Burroughs at his best. With all points in Shoaf, Section I, No. 60, 60(a), pg. 52; Schottlaender, A56(A), pg. 18.
