The Wisdom of the Heart

London, England, UK: Editions Poetry London/Nicholson & Watson, Ltd., 1947. First British Edition. Hardcover. "The Wisdom of the Heart contains a further selection of Mr. (Henry) Miller's writings. These cover a wide range of mood, style and subject-matter. Mr. Miller writes from the heart with a refreshing lack of reticence, and whatever moves him becomes exciting to the reader, too, by reason of his own enthusiasm. In this volume there are essays on Brassai (Gyula Halasz), the photographer; Raimu (Jules Auguste Muraire), the film star; (Benjamin) Benno, the painter; and E. Grahame Howe, the psychoanalyst, all of which have implications far beyond that of their immediate subject-matter. For Mr. Miller is more widely concerned with what goes on in the world than most writers. He is full of ideas, and each private enthusiasm or hatred of his is a starting-point for a deep probing into the heart of the world. In the essay, "Reflections on Writing," he examines his own position as a writer. In his essays on (Honore de) Balzac he applies himself to the work of another writer. But, whatever he touches, he expresses himself with exhilarating candour and freedom."
