New York, NY: HarperPrism/ HarperCollins, 1996. First Edition. Hardcover. "Isaac Asimov and science fiction are one and the same to millions of readers. He was the field's transcendent genius, its reigning prophet, its genial patriarch, and its most prolific author. Over his fifty-year career, "the good doctor" saw the literature he loved- and indeed helped create and nurture- grow from a tiny pulp subculture to a world-wide imaginative empire that has changed not only our books but our movies, our enthusiasms, even our dreams. In the process, the shy kid from Brooklyn became the most famous science fiction author the world has ever known. But Asimov also wrote fantasy, and invariably of an enduring quality. Magic is the final original collection, containing all of his uncollected fantasy stories that have never before appeared in book form. Wry and witty, they carry his unique, personal stamp of rationalism and logic." (from front flap) A collection of fantasy tales, as well as essays on fantasy-related topics & imaginative writing in general, by Isaac Asimov (1920-1992), the acclaimed, award-winning, ultra-prolific American author & scientific academician. Asimov's mutton-chopped image is indeed synonymous with science fiction, along with his peers in its Pantheon including Ray Bradbury, Robert A. Heinlein et al.; & his voluminous fantasy & non-fiction writings also remain most-influential & significant, as in this posthumously compiled volume. Hardcover in unclipped first-issue dust jacket (with sparkling letters at front cover, $22 price & "0196P" printed at front flap), first edition, "First Printing: January 1996" as stated on copyright page & as indicated by number sequence thereon. We found & have retained, between front paste-down & endpaper, a vintage, attractive bookmark from a branch of the late, great Borders Books & Music, in substantially mint condition. From the collection of Dr. Stanley Hurwick Levy (1926-2020), an American physician who met & conferred with Albert Einstein while a student prodigy at Princeton University during the 1940s, & was one of the most legendarily prolific book collectors of them all, over many years. This writer was privileged to attend a presentation/tour by Dr. Levy at his home here in Michigan some years ago, & can attest to the astonishing quantity & quality of his esteemed collection- some of which we have obtained, as here. A desirable & rewarding collectible in the vast & venerable Asimov canon, with distinguished provenance. Book in very fine condition with only a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; mild browning to edges of text block esp. upper & side edges; one short, thin line in ink (not likely a remainder mark) at lower edge of same from lower side-edge. Interior very fine with only mild-to-moderate browning of page leaves (mostly at blank margins/edges). Dust jacket very fine with only very light rubbing, faint scratching to front, esp. back covers & spine; a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same & flaps. Very Fine / Very Fine.
