XVI) A collection of the major orations & essays by Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC), the great Roman statesman & author who attempted to define & uphold the best principles of the Roman Republic during its transition into Empirical rule by Julius Caesar, & was killed by the order of Mark Antony the year following Caesar's assassination. Hardcover in slipcase (without dust jacket as issued), an especially beautiful production of the venerable Limited Editions Club, with an introduction by Reginald H(aynes) Barrow (1893-1984), the noted British historian; translations of the orations/essays from the original Latin into English by a variety of translators; & twelve portraits of Cicero & the subjects of his writings preceding & within each oration/essay by Salvatore Fiume (1915-1997), the great Italian painter & polymath. One of an edition of 1500 copies hand-numbered in black ink & signed in bold red ink by Fiume at colophon, this is copy No. 882/1500. Also loosely present, between front paste-down & endpaper, is the publisher's monthly newsletter No. 459 of September 1972, devoted to this volume with an essay thereon, single sheet printed on both sides folded horizontally & vertically to form four pages, in mint condition. A magnificent collectible in form & content. Book in very fine condition with only very slight rubbing to decorated cloth front, back covers & spine; a bit of wear & fading to edges & corners of same, a few faint scratches at light blue-dyed upper edge of text block. Interior very fine, substantially mint. Slipcase relatively near-fine-verging-on-fine with mild rubbing & a few tiny scuff-spots to black panels esp. front panel; very slight wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners; mild rubbing & edgewear to author/title sheet affixed to side/spine panel incl. slight loss of paper, surface paper.
