The World of Velazquez, 1599-1660 (Time-Life Library of Art Series)

New York, NY: Time-Life Books, 1969. First Edition. Hardcover in Slipcase. "Half in shadow, Diego de Silva Velazquez, the greatest of Spanish painters, looks out at us from the greatest of his paintings, Las Meninas, or The Ladies in Waiting. This is no self-portrait in the great tradition of a Rembrandt, who so oftern bared his soul for all to see. It is merely Velazquez' statement of how he happened to appear in a certain light on an afternoon in 1656. He then stood at the peak of his career, dignified by fame, honored by Spain's proud and apparently all-powerful King- and yet he saw fit to show himself only as a part of the whole, as nothing more than an element in an overall composition. Search the shadowed face for some clue to his personality and you come up with questions instead of answers. Is that melancholy in those black eyes, or is it reserve?" (first paragraph, Part I, "The Lure of Madrid," pg. 7) A study of the life, times & works of Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez (1599-1660), the Great Spanish painter of the Golden Age-Baroque period, most-highly inspiring & influential to all generations of Great artists thereafter (including of course Salvador Dali). With richly informative chapter-essays by Dale Brown (unrelated to the acclaimed techno-thriller writer of the same name; & about whom we could find no information) & a staff of editors; with many lavishly reproduced, explicated images of artworks, details & objects, many in color. A stately production of the Time-Life Library of Art series, large coffee-table hardcover in slipcase with color detail from Las Meninas pasted onto front panel, presumed first edition/ first printing though neither stated as such at copyright page. From the collection of Barbara (1935-2023) & Irving (1933-2018) Nusbaum, world travellers, connoisseurs, eminent collectors of art & books- the dearly beloved parents of this grieving writer. I fondly recall a family trip to Spain & Portugal as a youngster in 1970 (the year following publication of this volume), & being introduced by my historically learned father to the works of Velazquez & the other Great Spanish Masters at the Prado Museum in Madrid for the first time. A beautiful & most-insightful Velazquez collectible, with distinguished provenance. Book in very fine condition, all-but-mint inside & out. Slipcase relatively quite very fine with just a touch of wear & rubbing to edges & corners of panels. Very Fine / (Slipcase) Very Fine. [Item #6212]
