Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin, 1986. First American Edition. Hardcover. “With the publication of the best-selling The Handmaid’s Tale in 1986, Margaret Atwood’s place in North American letters was reconfirmed. Poet, short story writer, and novelist, she was acclaimed ‘one of the most intelligent and talented writers to set herself the task of deciphering life in the late twentieth century.’ (Le Anne Schreiber, Vogue)” (from front flap) The legendary Margaret Atwood (b. 1939) brings us another collection of short stories after the award-winning Dancing Girls (1977) and Murder in the Dark (1983). Bluebeard’s Egg was originally published in 1983 as well, and the American edition, offered here, came in 1986 with the title Bluebeard’s Egg and Other Stories. The success of The Handmaid’s Tale launched the Canadian author into a new era of American exposure leading to the republication of her previous collections. Two stories were omitted from the American edition (“The Sin Eater” & “Betty”), which were added to the American edition of Dancing Girls in 1992. The thirteen stories included explore the intricacies and delicacies of sex and relationships, though a few stray from this theme as autobiographical ruminations of the narrator reflecting on influences and experiences. From the collection of Stanley Hurwick Levy (1926-2020) — legendarily precocious Princetonian (where he walked and talked and studied with the likes of Albert Einstein, among others) — before embarking upon a prodigious, near mythic seventy-year career as a practicing physician, during which he collected prolifically.
