New York, NY: Harry N. Abrams, 1979. First Edition. Hardcover. "This is the first comprehensive study of the painting of Alex Katz, who over the past two decades has established himself as one of America's finest and most innovative artists. Katz has led the reinterpretation of figurative subject matter that followed in the wake of Abstract Expressionism's great achievements of the late forties and early fifties. Believing that recognizable imagery and faithfulness to observed detail could still give rise to important contemporary painting, he gradually evolved a pictorial vocabulary that is at once personal, new, and uniquely expressive of our times. In so doing, Katz has made an indelible mark on the history of American art, and his influence on younger artists is pervasive." (from front flap) The first- & still finest- full-to-date survey of the paintings of Alex Katz (b. 1927), the canonical American artist. With text by Irving Sandler (1925-2018), the venerable American art-historical critic & academician who was a close friend & devotee of Katz since the mid-1950s; & hundreds of illustrations, over seventy in lavish color & tipped-in (including several fold-outs). A beautiful, classically exemplary production of the esteemed Abrams imprint, door-stopper coffee-table hardcover in illustrated dust jacket, presumed first edition/first printing though neither explicated as such per earlier custom of this publisher. From the collection of Barbara (1935-2023) & Irving (1933-2018) Nusbaum, world travellers, connoisseurs, eminent collectors of art (including several Katz artworks) & books- the dearly beloved parents of this grieving writer. The foundational Katz collectible in its rarest contemporary form, with distinguished provenance. Book in relatively quite fine condition with only mild rubbing, fading mostly at edges & corners of yellow-colored cloth front, back covers & spine (bold red letters at spine appear completely bright & intact); light rubbing, browning, faint scratching & occasional spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only light browning mostly at blank margins/edges of page leaves. Dust jacket (again relatively) fine with mild rubbing, mostly faint scratching & a hint of browning to front, back covers, spine & flaps; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; several tiny-to-very-small, light spot-stains at front cover (barely effecting figurative painting image); very slight fading of colors at spine. An extra handling fee will be added for shipping due to the weight of this item. Fine / Fine. [Item #6220]
