Jane Eyre & Wuthering Heights (Two Volume Set)

New York, NY: Random House, 1943. Special Edition. Hardcovers. The world was fortunate that the Brontë sisters survived through the hardships of 19th century England even as a well-off family. Charlotte (1816-1855), Emily (1818-1848), and Ann (1820-1849) Brontë outlived three other sisters to reach adulthood, though sadly none of them made it very far. The three of them originally published their writings under male pseudonyms, Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. Currer Bell (Charlotte) was the author listed on the original publication of Jane Eyre in 1847, and Ellis Bell (Emily) published Wuthering Heights the same year. Included in this 1943 special edition of Wuthering Heights are a letter explaining why they disguised their identities (“Biographical Notice of Ellis and Acton Bell”) and a preface (“Editor’s Preface to the New Edition of Wuthering Heights”), both written by Charlotte, though signed Currer Bell. This edition of Jane Eyre includes an “Author’s Preface” from the second edition in 1847, signed Currer Bell. This 2-volume set is a beautiful hardcover production with pictorial boards and wood engraving prints by German illustrator Fritz Eichenberg (1901-1990). From the collection of Dr. Stanley Hurwick Levy (1926-2020), American physician who met & conferred with Albert Einstein while a student prodigy at Princeton University during the 1940s & was one of the most legendarily prolific book collectors of them all, over many years.
