A History of the Afghan

Detroit, MI: The Red Hanrahan Press, 1975. First Edition. Softcover. The obscure first collection of poems from Donna Brook (b. 1944) was published in Detroit where she lived from the age of 14. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan here in Ann Arbor, and her master’s degree is from Wayne State University in Detroit. Her poetry was published periodically in small magazines since 1968 until this debut collection was published by Bill Cox at the Red Hanrahan Press, named after the W.B. Yeats bard, during the small press revival in the late 1960s & early 1970s. The same era is when Robin Eichele (b. 1941) and John Sinclair (1941-2024) founded the Detroit Artists’ Workshop. This copy was inscribed to Robin Eichele at the time of publication on the half-title page in black, felt-tip pen reading: “To Robin, / May your kettle / never be stolen! / Love, / Donna / Oct 15 ‘75”. There may be an inside joke referenced here, or perhaps it is simply a poetic good tidings. Ann Mikolowski (1940-1999) provided the cover illustration, and a photo of Brook by Carl Schurer closes out this volume. A most collectible obscurity from the golden age of our local publishers with distinguished provenance. From the collection of Robin Eichele (b. 1941), noted Mimeograph Revolutionary of the Detroit Artists’ Workshop. Softcover: First Edition, First Printing, as stated on copyright page, 1 of 750 softcover copies published simultaneously with a hardcover edition. Book is in very fine condition with only light bumping, creasing to the corners of back cover; very minor scuffing, denting near top of back cover. Very Fine. [Item #6252]
