The Paintings of Henry Miller

Santa Barbara, CA: Capra Press, 1982. Limited First Edition. Hardcover in Slipcase. Signed by Lawrence Durrell. "Henry Miller always gave the impression of enjoying a pleasant, if somewhat infantile, flirtation with paint, but in fact his love went very deep, and whatever his positive achievements as an artist may be, his random sensibility drew a great part of its richness from the world of colour- into which he had penetrated with delight long before his arrival in Paris. He outlines this long love affair with paint in the course of his writings, and the papers gathered here form an excellent frame of reference for his admirers...He was always extremely curious about the problems and processes of the painter and always believed that one appreciated better the hazards of the painting game by "trying it out on the dog," the dog in question being himself." (from Foreword by Lawrence Durell, pg. 17) A survey of paintings by Henry Miller (1891-1980), the great American author & artist whose earlier literary works influenced & were an inspiration to the writers of the Beat Generation. Arguably, Miller's artworks were also influential to Beat-&-related author-artists, when compared to those of Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jack Kerouac, Kenneth Patchen et al. Edited & with a preface by Noel Young (1922-2002), founder of the Capra Press imprint; & with a Foreword (quoted in excerpt above) by Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990), the celebrated & prolific British-born cosmopolitan novelist & travel writer who was a close friend & colleague of Miller. With, of course, many magnificent color (very colorful indeed) reproductions of Miller's artworks, interspersed with excerpts from Miller's art-related writings accompanied by black-&-white reproductions of drawings & artworks, altogether spanning Miller's long career as artist & author from the 1930s through the 1970s. Hardcover in coarse blue cloth, in grey-cloth covered slipcase with color reproduction of a Miller artwork affixed to front panel. A beautiful & sumptuous production of Young's Capra Press, one of a special edition of 250 copies published during November 1982, hand-numbered in red ink & boldly signed by Durrell in black ink, this is copy No. 248/250. With ALL points (nearly three pages' worth) in Shifreen & Jackson, A238(a), pgs. 497-500. From the collection of Dr. Stanley Hurwick Levy (1926-2020), an esteemed American physician who met & conferred with Albert Einstein while a student prodigy at Princeton University during the 1940s, & was one of the most legendarily prolific book collectors of them all, over many years. This writer was privileged to attend a presentation/tour by Dr. Levy at his home here in Michigan some years ago, & was duly impressed with his vast collection. Among the most desirable Miller collectibles in its scarcest, most elaborate & significant form, with distinguished provenance. Book in very fine condition, quite substantially mint inside & out. Slipcase very fine with only a touch of rubbing, faint scratching to color illustration affixed to front panel; occasional spotting at rear side panel. An extra handling fee will be added for shipping due to the size and weight of this item. Very Fine / (Slipcase) Very Fine. [Item #6332]
