The Theatre & other pieces (Stroker No. 11, 1979)

New York, NY: Stroker, 1979. First Edition/ Variant Trade Issue. Stapled Wrappers. Inscribed, signed & dated by Henry Miller. "I have not been to a theatre or even to a movie in a long while. I must confess I do not miss either of them. I feel I have drunk deep from the Pierian Spring. Most of the time I am not in this world, though very much of it. I fear no danger of a shortage of spiritual nourishment. Enjoy yourselves!" (from "The Theatre," Epilogue, pg. 12) This number of the literary-art-cultural journal edited by NYC St. Marks Place underground denizen Irving Stettner is a "Henry Miller Issue" (back cover) devoted to the theatre-&-art-critical writings & correspondence of the great American author & artist whose earlier literary works (& arguably artworks) were an influence & inspiration to the Beat Generation. With several reproductions of Miller artworks interspersed among the articles & letters. Also at the end of this issue is an opinion article by Robert Brown entitled "Why Don't They Give Henry Miller the Nobel Prize?," reprinted from the June 1979 issue of HiLIFE magazine. Chapbook-format journal in stapled wrappers. This copy most-conforms to the "First Edition/ Variant Trade Issue" described in Shifreen & Jackson, A226(c), pg. 483. Quoting S&J: "The trade edition (A226(b), pg. 483) was initially bound in brown wrappers; however, according to Irving Stettner, the editor of Stroker, when the supply of brown wrappers was exhausted, the tan wrappers of the Limited Edition (A226(a), pg. 482) were used. What percentage of the wrappers used for this Trade Edition were brown verses tan, is not known." (pg. 483) S&J also note in this entry that this variant edition features blue, rather than red, endpapers, as in the other two editions. A collective total of 500 copies were produced of all three editions, & A226(a) above consists of 100 hand-numbered copies signed by Miller at title/contents page. The copy here offered features tan cover wrappers & blank blue endpapers as described in A226(c) above; but also is hand-numbered "11" in pencil near upper edge of title/contents page, just below which, in bold black ink, Miller has hand-written, signed & dated: "For Naftali and Ruth/ Nottman/ (signed) Henry Miller/ 11/7/79." Further down the page, near right edge in pencil, is written: "100-/ (underline)/ TxY." We conclude that this copy is from the variant edition described in A226(c) above, but which was effectively enlisted as part of the "Limited Issue" of 100/500 per A226(a) above, & is further a presentation copy, inscribed & signed to the Nottmans (of whom we could not obtain information) by Miller, & dated (either November 7 or July 11, 1979) at or close to the time of publication. We note that as Miller died on June 7, 1980, this inscription, signature & date were written by him within less than a year before his death. From the collection of Dr. Stanley Hurwick Levy (1926-2020), a most-respected American physician who met & conferred with Albert Einstein while a student prodigy at Princeton University during the 1940s, & was one of the most legendarily prolific book collectors of them all, over many years. This writer was privileged to attend a presentation/tour by Dr. Levy at his home here in Michigan some years ago, & was duly impressed with his vast & varied collection. A very significant late Miller collectible in a singularly rich & scarce form (as we painstakingly describe above), with distinguished provenance. In relatively quite very fine condition with only light rubbing to front, back covers & stapled spine; a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at/from edges & corners of same; one very small area of light spot-staining (or residue?) nearest lower left corner of front cover; very slight rubbing, browning & occasional spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only a hint of browning to blank margins/edges of page leaves; tiny bumps at corners of some leaves. Very Fine. [Item #6334]
