The Immortal Bard

London, England: Village Press, 1973. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. “I need to be alone. I need to ponder my shame and my despair in seclusion; I need the sunshine and the paving stones of the streets without companions, without conversation, face to face with myself, with only the music of my heart for company.” Henry Miller, “Tropic of Cancer”. Henry Miller (1891–1980) was an American novelist, short story writer, and essayist of a caliber rarely seen once a generation. Monumental works like: “Tropic of Cancer” (1934); “Tropic of Capricorn” (1939); “The Rosy Crucifixion Trilogy” (1949, 1953, 1959); and the short story collection “Black Spring” (1936) are just a few exemplary pieces that comprise Miller’s fantastic oeuvre. Known for its subversive, semi-autobiographical nature Miller's work was categorized by its stream of consciousness, surrealist free association, mysticism, and philosophical reflection. Offered here today, “The Immortal Bard” is Miller’s loving tribute to John Cowper Powys (1872–1963). An English novelist, philosopher, poet, and critic Powys was not only a beloved writer of his time, but a massive inspiration for Miller as well. A four page essay, “The Immortal Bard” is a wonderful write up by Miller analyzes and dives into the philosophical depths of Powys’ work and how important it was to Miller. An incredibly rare and fascinating work by Miller, for any and all fans of literary commentary/criticism and Miller himself! Stapled Wrappers. First & presumably only edition though not explicated as such. Pamphlet is in very fine condition with only the slightest wear to fine edges. Very Fine. [Item #6336]
