The Dead Star (Nova Broadcast 5)

San Francisco, CA: Nova Broadcast Series / Jan Herman, 1969. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. (Maynard & Miles A14, p. 60; Schoaf I-16; Schottlaender A21, p. 10). Published by Jan Herman’s (b. 1942) Nova Broadcast Press as “Nova Broadcast, No. 5)” & distributed by City Lights Books, William S. Burroughs' (1914-1997) “The Dead Star” marks the first standalone publication of WSB’s gripping short routine. It originally appeared in a different form four years earlier, in August of 1965. The mid-1960s were a particularly prolific time for WSB, — and 1965 an early apex in Burroughs’ literary-cultural impact & life. For more on Burroughs & this period, Your Devoted Managing Curator Recommends viewing TMB’s 2024 European Beat Studies Network Presentation at the following link: https://tinyurl.com/43yduvy6). Refocusing our attention to the item before us, “The Dead Star” is essentially a “pamphlet with a long folding broadside tipped in,” as Brian Schottlaender (Marine-Strength Burroughsian & among his best & most essential bibliographers) puts it in“Anything But Routine,” his gold-standard bibliography cited at the beginning of this curation. We at TMB find it an essential read in several ways: the first involving a consideration of its contents alongside the work and activity of 1965, referred to above; and the second consisting of an assessment inclusive of its publication year, 1969, and the way in which that year represents a new public epoch in the political life of its author. Chapbook in stapled wrappers: First Edition, though not indicated as such on "copyright page” (which is printed on recto of back wrapper, at interior). In strong near fine condition with only moderate-to-enunciated bumping-creasing to corners of front, back covers & spine-edge; similarly moderate-to-enunciated rubbing at varying locales & select low-visibility nicks to/at same; interior clean & complete. Near Fine. [Item #6341]
