Reunion in Barcelona

Northwood, Middlesex, UK: Scorpion Press, 1959. Limited First Trade Edition. Softcover. "Dear Fred,/ In a few days it will be a year since we had our reunion. If fifteen years ago, when we were saying goodbye to one another in London, anyone had predicted that our next meeting would take place in Spain- in Barcelona, of all places!- I would have laughed him down. The logical meeting place should have been Ibiza, or Ischia, or even the Island of Rhodes. However, we finally did meet again, that is the important thing. And now I can make a clean breast of it and tell you that when we parted in London I had little hope of ever seeing you again." (first paragraph, pg. 7) An epistolary journal-diary in the form of a letter by Henry Miller (1891-1980), the great American author & artist whose earlier works were an influence & inspiration to the Beat Generation. Initially dated May 1, 1954 & concluding with the date of May 19, 1954, the recipient of this "letter" (undoubtedly edited/expanded for publication) is Alfred Perles (1897-1990), the noted Austrian writer who was a long-time friend & associate of Miller, as well as their mutual colleagues Lawrence Durrell & Anais Nin. Softcover in wrappers, from the first trade edition of 450 copies hand-numbered at colophon/copyright page published during February 1959, this is copy No. 56/450. With all points in Shifreen & Jackson, A114(b), pgs. 317-318. Colophon states: "This first edition in English of 'Reunion in Barce-/ lona' is limited to 500 copies, of which Nos. 1-50 are signed by the author." Therefore, this copy is only No. 6/450 of the limited first trade edition; & the "Limited Issue" of No.s 1-50 (S&J A114(a)) differ from this trade edition only by "...the lack of Miller's signature on the colophon page (S&J, A114(b), pg. 318). From the collection of Dr. Stanley Hurwick Levy (1926-2020), an esteemed American physician who met & conferred with Albert Einstein while a prodigious student at Princeton University during the 1940s, & was among the most legendarily prolific book collectors of them all. This writer was privileged to attend a presentation/tour conducted by Dr. Levy at his home here in Michigan some years ago, & was duly astounded by his vast collection. An exemplary & rewarding mid-career Miller collectible in its penultimately rarest contemporary form, with distinguished provenance. In relatively quite fine condition with only light rubbing, browning & a touch of fading to front, back covers & spine; very slight wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only a hint of browning to off-white blank inner covers & page leaves. Fine. [Item #6342]
