Live at the Church
New York, NY, USA: Kulchur Foundation, 1977. First Edition. Softcover. "Phoebe dips a curved blue spoon into/ the soft mouth of Ocean, then/ retrieves it from the lips of Ocean Lee, the baby/ frowns, he grins! He can dig it!" ("First Banana," pg. 20) A collection of poems by Lewis MacAdams (1944-2020), the beloved cult-popular American poet, journalist, environmental activist & filmmaker. This volume is a transcription of a broadcast of reading-performances by MacAdams, including at the legendary-to-Third-Minds Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church in the Bowery, NYC- thus the title. Full of humor, worldliness & myriad themes in the highest Beat-&-Beyond spirit, these poems, prose-poems & miscellaneous meanderings are a delight on the page, as they must have been seen & heard live. Large-format softcover original, first edition, first printing though neither specified at copyright page. With front cover reproduction of photograph of MacAdams taken by Gerard Malanga; without errata slip we have seen reference to. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the acclaimed American poet, bibliographer, editor & publisher who was the foremost remaining authority on Charles Olson (1910-1970), the Great Black Mountain-&-Beyond Poet's Poet who is our favorite Maximus Obscurantist. Glover was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & ever since served outstandingly as the Premiere Olsonian Torch-Bearer. We were privileged to know Glover, & are deeply saddened by his recent passing. It is worth noting that MacAdams obtained his Master's degree from SUNY Buffalo, likely overlapping at least partly with Glover's attendance, & that they therefore were probably at least acquaintances if not colleagues. An essential, rich & rewarding MacAdams collectible in its rarest contemporary form, with most-distinguished & relevant provenance. In relatively near-fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, mostly faint scratching & a hint of age-toning to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at/from edges & corners of same; light rubbing & age-toning to edges of text block. Interior fine with very slight age-toning, occasional spotting to blank inner covers; a touch of age-toning to page leaves, chiefly at blank margins/edges; tiny bumps & very small, faint creases at corners of a few leaves. Near Fine. [Item #8905]
