[Item #2105] From a Swedish Notebook. Samuel Charters.

From a Swedish Notebook

Berkeley, CA: Oyez, 1972. First Softcover Printing. Softcover. A volume of untitled poems & a few prose-poem/journal entries by Samuel Charters, noted blues-jazz historian, musician & poet. With reproduction of a photograph of a maypole in Sweden taken by his wife Ann Charters, the Beat Generation authority & early biographer of Jack Kerouac. The Charters family had moved from the USA to Sweden in 1970, disenchanted with the prolonged Vietnam War. "A month after the invasion of Cambodia we were living on a farm in central Sweden, in the stillness and light of a Swedish midsummer. I think some of this is in the poems, and the life in Stockholm in the two years since then has given me a feeling of the other sides of Swedish life without taking away the excitement I felt in the farmhouse those first weeks."(from introduction-dedication) An interesting Charters rarity, in fine condition with only mild rubbing, soiling & scratching to front, back covers & esp. spine; very tiny bumps & chips at corners & edges of same. Interior mostly very fine except for light but extensive smudges on pages 37, 41 & 53, slightly effecting but not obscuring text. Fine. [Item #2105]
