Snatch Comics No. 3

San Francisco, CA: Apex Novelties/The Print Mint, 1972. Second Printing (?). Stapled Wrappers. The third & final number in the notorious series of small-format (5"x7") underground comix booklets which lives up to its motto "The New All-Time Low in Smut!" even to this day. With explicitly depicted berserk sex satires & fantasies by such golden age masters as Robert Crumb (front & back cover illustrations, "Don't Touch Me" comic episode, etc.); Robert Williams ("Shit Hell Fuck Funnies," inner back cover illustration, etc.); S. Clay Wilson ("Dwarf Revolt Tales," etc.) & more. Along with the first two issues of this series & its infamous cohorts Jiz, Felch & Pork, this little booklet stands among the ultimate provocations of free expression. Originally published in August 1969, this copy, to the best of our knowledge after consulting the vast & sometimes contradictory scholarship, is from the second printing of 1972. The points that indicate a first printing, including faint lines at the bottom of all or most interior pages & rough trimming with skewed binding, are not present here. The second & third printings are indistinguishable according to comixjoint.com, & the fourth printing has a seventy-five cent cover price (the first three printings have a fifty-cent cover price as here). According to the latest Fogel's Underground Price & Grading Guide, the price goes up from fifty to seventy-five cents with the third printing, & there is no reference to a fourth printing. Per the above, we have concluded that the "second" & "third" printings are substantially the same. An essential acquisition in the comix canon, in most likely its second-rarest form, still close to the original. For adult completist collectors only. In relatively fine condition, approximately equivalent to at least a 6.5 grade per Fogel's, CGC, etc.: Very light rubbing & creasing to front, back covers; mild browning & soiling to white margins of back cover; faint, uncontiguous crease along length of spine. Interior fine except for browning of just-above-newspaper quality pages esp. margins & edges very lightly effecting inner front & back covers; but pages not brittle & with barely any acidic scent. Fine. [Item #2236]
