A collection of poems by Ted Berrigan (1934-1983), among the giants of the New York School & a category onto himself with a most unique, varied style. Ranging from very short, haiku-like pieces to long works that combine poetry & prose-poetry, the contents of this volume exemplify Berrigan's mature forms. The dedication is to his wife, Alice Notley, the acclaimed later New York School poet who wrote an introduction to a posthumous collection (Ted Berrigan: Selected Poems, 1994). This is the stated first edition trade hardcover, with front cover dust jacket illustration by noted poet-artist Rochelle Kraut; & back cover photo image of Berrigan by Gerard Malanga, the legendary poet, photographer & Andy Warhol "Factory" associate. This copy is very special, our rarest & most significant Berrigan offering thus far: The poet has hand-written on the short title page: "For Ken & Ann (sic)/with great affection,/my best book/(signed) Ted Berrigan." "Ken & Ann" are Ken Mikolowski, the esteemed poet, publisher & academic; & his late wife Anne (misspelled here as "Ann"), noted artist & co-publisher. The Mikolowskis published their colleague & friend Berrigan during this decade on their Alternative Press imprint in Detroit. In this inscription, Berrigan declares this to be his "best" work to such peers. An exceptionally important Berrigan collectible with very significant associations. Book in very fine condition with only moderate spotting to upper edge of text block; otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Unclipped dust jacket in fine condition with only light rubbing to front, back covers & spine; thin vertical lines of color-loss at left edge & near right edge of back cover; short, faint angled crease ending at lower right corner of back cover; miniscule amount of wear & creasing at all edges & corners; several tiny-to-small light spot-stains on blank front inner flap; one small (approx. dime-sized) light spot-stain on blank rear inner flap.
