[Item #2737] "The Oracle" Print. Rick Griffin.

"The Oracle" Print

San Francisco, CA: The San Francisco Oracle, Circa 1967. First Printing (presumed). Single Sheet. A print (approx. 11&1/2"x14&1/2") with illustration by the legendary artist Rick Griffin (1944-1991), creator of iconic poster, album & underground comix artworks. The image depicted is entitled "The Oracle" & appears to be a variation of Griffin's front cover artwork for the sixth issue of The San Francisco Oracle, published in 1967. The Oracle was a key underground newspaper that flourished at the height of the San Francisco Hippie counterculture (1966-1968) & featured contributions by all the major figures of that era including William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg & others who bridged the Beat Generation onto the avant-garde during this psychedelic epoch & beyond. An exemplary, dizzyingly detailed ink drawing with colorful background, beautifully reproduced in this very high-quality offset or screen print. A most rare & desirable griffin collectible. In very fine condition with only one faint horizontal crease through middle where once folded in half, with no loss to artwork or background; one short, faint crease at upper right blank margin near upper right corner; thin lines of color, vertically at upper right margin, horizontally at left & right margins just above middle (undoubtedly result of printing process as issued). Mounted on stiff board, in protective shrinkwrap, with a few tiny spots on surface of shrinkwrap, not print. May incur slight increase in shipping charges. Very Fine. [Item #2737]
