South San Francisco, CA: ManRoot Press, 1983. First Trade Softcover Edition. Softcover. A volume beginning with the title poem & seven more by Clive Matson, the acclaimed poet of "direct expression," noted educator & a protege-member of the Beat Generation during the NYC literary scene of the early 1960s. With front cover & many interior medallion-illustrations by Renee June; photograph & brief biography of Matson following poems; blurbs by Diane di Prima & others printed on back cover. As noted in colophon, this first trade edition "...has been reproduced photographically from the original edition." The original edition referred to was a letterpress production published the previous year (1982), numbered & signed by Matson & June. Present in this copy is a folded single-sheet prospectus for this & another book by Matson, "On the Inside." The prospectus refers to this edition as being "signed," but it is not, by either the poet or artist. Several laudatory statements in reference to this work in the prospectus include this from the late esteemed, prolific poet & playwright Robert Peters: "The male/female selves present in one lover must orchestrate with those selves in the other. Matson celebrates the flowing of these selves with grace and passion. When you read these poems you feel you have been somewhere that matters." The second-rarest version of an essential Matson collectible, enriched by the prospectus. Book in very fine condition with only tiniest bumps at corners of covers; tiny line of spotting in blank area just above last name of author on front cover; otherwise virtually mint inside & out. Prospectus in very fine condition with creases where folded into quarters presumably as issued; a few short, faint creases on surfaces; one very small dimple at left upper edge. Very Fine.
