The Orange in The Orange: A Novella & Two Stories

Santa Rosa, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 1995. First Trade Softcover Edition. Softcover. This late publication from Fielding Dawson reflects the time he spent as the Chairman of the PEN Prison Writing Committee. At the time of the publication of this book, Dawson was serving as the Creative Writing teacher at the infamous Sing Sing Prison, and the experience permeates the energy field of this book while dually informing its subject matter. Dawson is also known as an exceptional painter, and his most famous work, "Cy Twombly at Black Mountain," echoes the masterworks of painting immortals Vincent Van Gogh, Edvard Munch, and other Expressionist/Impressionist masters. Also, one senses an awareness of the work of Marsden Hartley, the painter and poet active in the Modernist era and contemporary of Gertrude Stein, Hart Crane, and Sherwood Anderson. One thing is certain when reading or viewing a Dawson work: it is inevitably from the mind of a dedicated student of a distinctive & visionary pedigree, of an extended family of fierce innovators united by a desire to move art further forward. In this sense, Dawson, and many of his notable contemporaries, are their rightful sons. Book in very fine condition with only slightest rubbing to front, back covers; slight shelf-wear to same; minute bumps to top right, bottom right corners of front cover; similar minute bump to top right, bottom left corners of back cover.
