Los Angeles, CA: Bombshelter Press/ Michael Andrews, 1989-1990. First Printing; Original Ephemera. Softcover; Single Sheets. Includes announcement with signature of editor Jack Grapes. A collectors' bundle relating to On the Bus, the acclaimed Los Angeles literary journal edited by Jack Grapes, the award-winning poet, playwright, actor & educator: (1) On the Bus: A New Literary Magazine, Fifth Issue, Vol. II, No. 1, Spring 1990. This early number features an in-depth interview with Beat-&-Beyond cult favorite writer Charles Bukowski, conducted by publisher Michael Andrews "...some time before John Fante and James Cagney died" (the earlier to die was Fante in 1983, therefore that year or before). Also in this issue are two poems by noted poet Keith Abbott including "Today at the Start"; three by Kate Braverman including "Prophecy in May"; the poem "Henna" by Miriam Sagan, & much, much more poetry (mostly) & prose. With an extensive section of reviews, translations, illustrations including front cover artwork by DeLoss McGraw, contemporary ads, etc. Loosely included are four sheets of approx. the same dimensions as page leaves, promoting issues No. 4, 5 & 6 of the Magazine & two books- the anthology "The New Los Angeles Poets" edited by Grapes, & "Trees, Coffee, and the Eyes of Deer," with Grapes's new & selected poems. The sheets are each a different color, with printing on recto & verso, & we presume they were placed in the issue by publisher when it was released. A beautiful production & a significant issue in this collectible series. (2) Two loose letter-size sheets, one "Announcing the Publication of a new literary quarterly," specifically the second issue of On the Bus, hand-signed by Grapes; & a second sheet promoting the second issue, with list of contributors, etc. Both sheets printed only on recto. A wonderful grouping of Grapes & co. L.A.-centric literary collectibles. (1) in very fine condition with only tiny bumps at corners of front, back covers & spine; miniscule amount of wear at thin edges of same. Interior substantially mint except for tiny bumps at upper corners of some page leaves. Loose sheets in very fine condition with only very light creasing & tiny corner bumps where upper & side edges extended slightly beyond dimensions of front cover. (2) both in fine condition with two horizontal creases across each where originally folded into three sections; some light, faint creasing of surfaces & edges; tiny bumps at both upper right corners; small line of spotting (rusting?) near upper left corner recto of signed announcement sheet, bleeding from verso; a few additional, tiny spots at upper right edge verso of same. Fine-Very Fine. [Item #2897]
