The Famous Authors Calendar, 1976

Santa Barbara, CA: Christopher's Books, 1976. First Edition. Loose Broadside Sheets in Folder. A set of twelve loose broadside-sheets printed on one side with a calendar of every month during the year of 1976, above which is a boxed quote by a different famous author. Contributors include Barry Gifford (who would go on a few years later to publish Jack's Book, the classic oral biography of Jack Kerouac, with Lawrence Lee); Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance master David Meltzer (1937-2016); & the great American poet, critic & playwright Robert Peters (1924-2014). As noted on inner rear cover of the folder in which the calendar sheets are encased, the quotes are from both "...original and already published sources." The authors & sources are then listed. For example, Peters' quote ("Love is gentler than site-/ that is its burden.") on the March page is cited as sourced from the poem "Premonition" in his collection, The Sow's Head and Other Poems. Christopher's Books are a bookselling & publishing concern that apparently still flourishes, now in San Francisco, and writes in this folder: "A year full of salutations and activity to friends of the Press and to friends of the authors and to those of you who may also see this Calendar." A beautiful production, & a desirable piece of literary ephemera. Folder in near-fine condition with only light rubbing, scratching & short, faint creasing to front, rear panels & spine-fold; mild wear, tiny bumps & creases to edges & corners of same (bottom edges rough-cut as issued); one tiny pin-sized hole at middle of spine; one short, closed horizontal tear at upper right edge of front panel; one small, circular area of discoloration with slight loss of surface near upper right corner of front panel, bleeding slightly onto inner front panel. Loose calendar sheets in very fine condition with only very slight wear, miniscule bumps & creases at some edges & corners; tiny spots at middle of upper edges of first two (January, February) sheets. Near Fine/ Very Fine. [Item #3199]
