Red Midnight Moon

San Francisco, CA: Empty Elevator Shaft, 1973. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Inscribed & signed by Robert Peters to James Perrizo. "like an irate mouse/ kept from its nest/ part of myself/ hides from you./ I've not done well./ please understand./ something/ may yet shimmer,/ something, I hope,/ keep light, a/ whisker-breath/ from truth." ("division poem" in its entirety) An early chapbook collection with the title poem & twelve other works by Robert Peters (1924-2014), the profound & prolific American poet, playwright, performer, professor & critic. A beautiful production with three types of colored, presumably handmade papers. Exquisite illustration of Peters by acclaimed artist Don Bachardy on back cover. On inner side of front endpaper, Peters has hand-inscribed & signed: "Jim-/ What do you think?/ 13 years later- I/ do think love can be a/ "comforter"- is that progress?"/ Love/ (signed) Robert/ Mich(igan) 20 May '86/ flourish-doodle." "Jim" is James Perrizo (1944-2006), an important Beat-&-Beyond scholar & collector who was a friend of & corresponded extensively with Peters. Peters' comment about love being a "comforter" in turn refers to a phrase of poet William Carlos Williams quoted on the dedication page preceding the poems: "love is no comforter, rather a nail/ in the skull." A very scarce & wonderful Peters collectible, enhanced by this warm & lengthy inscription, association & provenance. In very fine condition with only light, faint creasing-curling at upper right corner of front cover/ upper left corner of back cover, echoing very slightly onto endpapers; very short, faint creases one each at upper edge & lower right corners of front cover; main part of interior substantially mint. Very Fine. [Item #3259]
