Hawthorne: Poems Adapted from the American Notebooks

Fairfax, CA: The Red Hill Press, 1977. First Limited Trade Edition. Softcover. Inscribed & signed by Robert Peters to James Perrizo. "A series of poems adapted from Nathaniel Hawthorne's American Notebooks, The Wayside Edition of Hawthorne's Works (Boston, 1891), XVII and XVIII, with additions from the version expanded and edited by Claude M. Simpson (Columbus, 1973)." (from editor's note/ acknowledgments) In this beautiful production, the above-noted poems of the great American canonical author Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) are presented with exquisite etchings by acclaimed artist Carol Yeh. Compiled & edited by Robert Peters (1924-2014), the great American poet, playwright, critic & scholar who originally specialized in Victorian-era literature, its key and sometimes more obscure figures. Prior to & parallel with his cutting-edge poetry, plays & critical works, Peters published scholarly editions such as this. One of 950 copies in trade-format softcover edition. On the title page, Peters has inscribed & signed: "For Jim-/ the controversial poem is The/ Drowned Girl- copyright problems-/ Carol Yeh now lives in Mexico City./ (underline)/ (signed) Bob Peters with doodle-flourish/ May 20, 1986." "Jim" is James Perrizo (1944-2006), an important Beat-&-Beyond collector & scholar who was a friend of & extensive correspondent with Peters. A very desirable Peters-related rarity, especially with this particularly intimate, behind-the-scenes inscription, association & provenance. In very fine condition with only mild browning/sunning to front, back covers (esp. at-near edges) & spine; lightest wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; very light rubbing & occasional faint spotting at edges of text block esp. lower edge. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at upper corners of a few page leaves; otherwise virtually mint. Very Fine. [Item #3277]
