The Selected Letters of D.H. Lawrence
New York, NY: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, Inc., 1958. First Edition. Hardcover. "D.H. Lawrence stands in the first rank of letter writers; his drive and vitality, his overflow of creative energy, is expressed as forcefully in his correspondence as in his many volumes of prose and poetry. Diana Trilling...offers here a major selection of his letters. She has restored many names and references deleted from earlier collections, and in her careful footnotes she explains many of Lawrence's more obscure remarks. Mrs. Trilling's selection attempts to supply, as well as possible within a limited space, an outline of Lawrence's life- how he lived and where, and what he was doing." (from front flap) An acclaimed, vintage volume of letters by D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930), the great, pathbreaking British novelist & poet. Edited & with an introduction (in the form of a "Letter of Introduction" to colleague-critic Norman Podhoretz) by Diana Trilling (1905-1996), who along with her husband Lionel Trilling was among the most esteemed American literary critics & scholars of the twentieth century. Also with a convenient list of Lawrence's correspondents, a literary whos-who that includes E.M. Forster & Aldous Huxley. Part of the publisher's Great Letters Series, this is the first edition, first printing as stated on copyright page, hardcover in un-remainder clipped (although it is slightly clipped as issued at each flap corner) dust jacket. A now-classic compilation; & a collectible rarity in the Lawrence canon in this original form. Book in very fine condition with only two small areas of spot-staining to blank grey cloth front cover near middle & lower left corner; very light wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; slight rubbing, browning, occasional scratching & spotting at edges of text block. Interior very fine with only slight browning mostly at blank margins of page leaves. Dust jacket in relatively fine condition with moderate-to-mild rubbing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps, closed tears at edges & corners of same; moderate-to-significant sunning to spine; small rectangular area of discoloration near lower left corner of back cover where sticker was probably removed.
