This early number of the literary journal "devoted to international poetry" & edited by Eliot Weinberger features the long epic poem "Notebook of a Return to the Native Land" by Aime Cesaire (1913-2008), the venerated Martinique-born French-language poet, translated into English by Clayton Eshleman & Annette Smith. Eshleman, the acclaimed & prolific poet, translator & educator, also provides an introduction. On the contents page, just below the reference to this translation, Eshleman has hand-written: "For Jim, from Clayton./ 1988." "Jim" is James Perrizo, the late devoted Beat-&-Beyond collector & scholar. Also in this issue: An interview with the great Egyptian-Jewish-French poet Edmond Jabes (1912-1991) conducted by the esteemed & popular American novelist Paul Auster; "An Essay on H.D. (Hilda Doolittle) & the muse of the woman writer" by Rachel Blau Du Plessis; the poem "A Draft of Shadows" by the iconic Mexican poet Octavio Paz (1914-1998), translated by Weinberger from Spanish into English; 25 poems by Japanese poet-sculptor Kotaro Takamura (1883-1956) translated by Hiroaki Sato into English; & more. A key, rare issue in this venerable scholarly series, especially with Eshleman's signature, its association & provenance. In very fine condition with only very slight rubbing, browning & occasional light, faint creasing to front, back covers & spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; one small line of light smudging in blank area near lower edge of front cover; light rubbing to lower edge of text block.
