This early number of the literary journal "devoted to international poetry" & edited by Eliot Weinberger features the long epic poem "Notebook of a Return to the Native Land" by Aime Cesaire (1913-2008), the venerated Martinique-born French-language poet, translated into English by Clayton Eshleman & Annette Smith. Eshleman, the acclaimed & prolific poet, translator & educator, also provides an introduction. On the contents page, just below the reference to this translation, Eshleman has hand-written: "For Jim, from Clayton./ 1988." "Jim" is James Perrizo, the late devoted Beat-&-Beyond collector & scholar.
