The Sand Burg: Poems by Thomas Clark

London, England: Ferry Press, 1966. Limited First Trade Edition. Stapled Wrappers. "The pain of being a candy bar/ in a pub- oh madness it's/ beautiful not to be included,/ but it's lonely too and makes you remember/ the social instincts one can't ever foil!/ They're so great! Feeling like a man- what's better than that?" ("Explanatory Ways," first poem in this collection in its entirety) The first publication by Tom Clark (1941-2018), the brilliant & productive American poet, editor & biographer associated with many Beat-&-Beyond writers & schools, but with his very own clear, compelling style. With bold front cover illustration by Joe Brainard (1942-1994), the great & unclassifiable artist, writer & AIDS martyr. Large chapbook format in stapled wrappers. As noted in colophon on the last page, this is one of an edition of 500 un-numbered copies, of which 60 copies were signed by Clark & "...with a further poem written in by him." This is from the 440-copy limited trade edition. The penultimately rarest version of Clark's (still formally referred to as "Thomas") first published work. Probably no one more exemplifies our category of "The Prolific & Underappreciated" than Tom Clark, & we consider it one of our special missions to revive the rich legacy of this already half-forgotten major American literary figure. In exceptionally very fine condition with only lightest rubbing, occasional spotting to illustrated front, blank back covers & stapled spine; light wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; several short, faint creases at esp. upper left & lower right corners of back cover. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps to upper corners of page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3520]
