The Dead Father Poems

ISBN: 1891885170
Spartanburg, SC; Raleigh, NC: Holocene Publishing; Horse & Buggy Press, 2000. Limited First Edition. Sewn Wrappers. Signed by John Lane. A collection of poems by John Lane, the South Carolina native & noted, prolific poet, environmentalist & educator. The common theme of the poems is the poet's late father, whom he remembers with irreverent affection & as if he were still beside him engaging in the cozy banalities of life such as cooking breakfast & watching cars pass by while dispensing fatherly wisdom. Each poem is accompanied with a poignantly relevant illustration by the acclaimed artist Douglas Whittle. As noted in colophon, this copy is from a total edition of 550, 524 of which are '...hand-sewn with linen thread in a reinforced pamphlet stitch binding." This is hand-numbered copy No. 384/524. Though not called for in colophon, Lane has hand-written his signature below his printed name on title page. From the library of Thomas Rain Crowe, a kindred (North) Carolinian poet & publisher (including of works by Lane) who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting from San Francisco, item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). A sumptuous, beautiful hand-crafted co-production of Holocene Publishing & Horse & Buggy Press, of South & North Carolina respectively. A most desirable Lane-Whittle collectible with poet-to-poet provenance. In very fine condition with slight bubble-warpage to front cover of handmade outer wrappers undoubtedly as issued; very slight wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners including a few interior page leaves; otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Very Fine. [Item #3548]
