This early vintage number of the esteemed literary journal features the poem "Diagonal" (pgs. 110-113) by Clayton Eshleman, the acclaimed & prolific poet, editor & educator who resides near us in Michigan, our friend & mentor. On title page, Eshleman has hand-written his signature. Also in this issue are contributions of poetry by Paul Hannigan, Denise Levertov, Gerard Malanga, Octavio Paz (translated from Spanish into English by Eliot Weinberger), Beat Generation & environmentalist icon Gary Snyder, Peter Straub (who would become the famous horror novelist), Guiseppe Ungaretti (translated from Italian into English by a young Andrew Wylie, now the famous agent) & many, many more. Also with commentary-reviews by Paul Hannigan on the works of Diane Wakoski; Jim Harrison, the late, great writer who was also a co-editor of Sumac, on J.D. Reed's collection Expressways; Malanga on Charles Olson's oeuvre & reactions by his contemporaries (!) & more. With reproductions of artful photographs by Siv Sedering Fox & Dan Berger (the latter also an editor & contributor) on front cover & throughout interior. A very eclectic, sweeping, rich issue in this most collectible series. In fine condition with only mild-to-moderate rubbing, a few scratches, short creases & a bit of browning to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; small, thin area with loss of paper at upper spine-edge & corners; very light rubbing & sparse spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves; very short closed tears & creases at blank lower edges of a few of same. Fine. [Item #3643]
