Flushing, NY: Drue Heinz, 1996. First Printing. Softcover. Inscribed & signed by Patricia Eakins to Ann Mikolowski. This relatively recent vintage number of the prestigious literary journal then-chiefly edited by George Plimpton features an in-depth interview with the Pulitzer Prize-winning American author Richard Ford, conducted by Bonnie Lyons & preceded by a facsimile manuscript page from his novel Independence Day; & another of the great Israeli writer Amos Oz conducted by Shusha Guppy & preceded by a facsimile manuscript page in the Hebrew language. With contributions of fiction by Robert Owen Butler, Patricia Eakins & others. Above the title of her contribution, the short story "The Garden of Fishes," acclaimed author Eakins has hand-written, signed & dated not long after publication: "1/28/98 New York City/ To Ann Mikolowski,/ whose shadows are/ as marvelous as her/ lights, who paints/ the wholeness./ (signed) Patricia Eakins." Eakins has also crossed out her printed name below the title (pg. 202). The late Ann Mikolowski was the co-founder & conductor with her husband, the poet-educator Ken Mikolowski, of the legendary Alternative Press in Detroit & other Michigan locations, which published many primary poets of the Beat Generation, New York & Black Mountain Schools etc. Ann was also a brilliant artist (to which this writer who is a friend of Ken & has seen her works can attest), as Eakins enthuses about in this warm inscription. Also in this issue is a distinguished roster of contemporary poets including Irving Feldman, Joyce Carol Oates, Sharon Olds, Ira Sadoff & many others; & portfolios of artworks including "The View from the Bottom of the Well" by Louise Bourgeois. With notes on contributors, contemporary ads. Trade-format softcover, complete with attached sheet of subscription cards. A richly varied issue in this most collectible series; with very significant association & provenance. In very fine condition with only very slight rubbing to front, back covers & spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only very small-to-tiny bumps & creases at upper corners of some page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3848]
