The Telephone Book

n/p: Joe Napora, 1983. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Signed by Joe Napora. "I have always hated the telephone. Yes, these are personal poems. My first memory of the phone, before then it must have only been another decoration, just as our coal stove was only furniture until I burned by fingers on it, was when I received a call from a friend and my mother handed me the phone but instead of answering immediately I listened and the longer I waited to speak the more foolish I felt at not talking..." (from introduction) A collection of poems by Joe Napora, the passionate & prolific American poet, editor, publisher & activist. The poems (many but not all of which directly relate to the telephone) are interspersed with historic quotes about the aspirations & implications of the telephone when it was a new technology. With a brief prose-poetic introduction by Napora (quoted above), front cover reproduction of a page from a telephone book (remember those?) in which Napora's name, address & number are encircled. An apparently self-published chapbook production of unknown limitation. On the title page, Napora has hand-written his signature below his printed name in bold black ink. An obscure but rewarding rarity in the early Napora oeuvre. In very fine condition with only light rubbing & browning to front, back covers & stapled spine; very light wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; mild browning & spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only very small, faint creases at lower corners of some page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3899]
