Santa Barbara, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 1985. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by editor Millicent Dillon. "How I wish that I were with you now. I saw Bill [William Burroughs] for a few minutes, he called by to see me or I told Bryan [Brion Gysin] to let him in- rather send him in. I don't quite remember." (from letter of September 28, 1966 to Paul Bowles, pg. 290). A compendium of letters by Jane Bowles (1917-1973), wife of Paul Bowles & among the most acclaimed avant garde authors (if not nearly as prolific as her husband) in her own right. Famously troubled physically & emotionally to put it mildly (especially after suffering a severe stroke at age 40), it is a miracle that we have what there is of her literary legacy, including these fascinating letters spanning most of her life. Many of the letters are to Paul Bowles & there are many references to the scores of legendary literary figures who gravitated toward the Bowles' orbit in Tangier (see above quote). Edited & with an introduction by Millicent Dillon, the distinguished writer & scholar most associated with Jane & Paul Bowles. Hardcover in illustrated boards with cloth spine, an exemplary Black Sparrow production, one of 200 copies hand-numbered at colophon & signed by Dillon on blank page opposite copyright page. This is copy No. 17/200. An essential, foundational collectible in the slim but all-important Jane Bowles canon. In very fine condition with only very slight rubbing to edges & corners of front, back boards; mild spotting to upper edge of text block. Interior very fine, virtually mint. Publisher's clear protective jacket very fine with only mild rubbing to surfaces. Very Fine. [Item #3981]
