The Re(a)d Wheelbarrow: William Carlos Williams' Perfect Poem

Ashland, KY: BullHead Books, 2018. First Edition. Sewn Wrappers. Signed by Joe Napora. "What makes a poem a poem, meaning what, beyond words, are the materials of a poem? I've been writing poetry for over forty years, but I can't answer the question. Nor do I feel the need to try. Poetry is made in the writing of it not from theories about what is or isn't a poem. But I do find it interesting to ask this question about poetry: what makes a poem different from a statement?" (first paragraph, unpaginated) An essay by Joe Napora, the passionate & prolific poet, editor, publisher & activist. In this essay, Napora delves deeply & dissects one of the most well-known, acclaimed American poems: "The Red Wheelbarrow" by William Carlos Williams (1883-1963), the canonical poet-physician who was a great influence-mentor to Allen Ginsberg & many other Beat-&-Beyond figures. Napora brings Charles Olson & Ezra Pound (of the latter he has written & spoken somewhat extensively) into the discussion, & also employs an interesting graphic to help explain his insights into the poem's content & structure. As Napora notes in a brief afterword, "This close look at Williams' poem began...when my granddaughter Ruby was in the second grade and asked me to talk to her class about poetry." A beautiful chapbook production in sewn wrappers by Napora's own imprint BullHead Books. The colophon offers much information, but not as to limitation if any. With cover illustrations that evoke Williams' poem, various fonts & colors, & other graphics. On the title page, Napora has hand-written his signature in bold black ink below his printed name. An important & scarce Napora collectible, especially for Williams scholars. In very fine condition with only the slightest rubbing to front, back covers & sewn spine; a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at lower corners of page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #4024]
